STAN'S STORY

Hello Carson City! I’ve been reading these stories for months now and I find them very interesting. As I am part of the Paradise community I find the tales give me a sense of pride.

When I read the stories as a person going into life’s 3rd act they give me hope. I am so happy for the people featured in them because they have overcome so much.

But as fascinating as the stories are, I noticed there was something missing from them. My story is totally different from all the stories so far, so I told Starr and Perry that I wanted to tell my story. What’s different about me is that there was nothing seriously wrong with me when I came to Paradise. I was merely suffering from sitting disease and since I retired, a case of house gravity.

I swear, Hollywood could make fifty films based on the lives of the struggles of the people in the Paradise community.

So far as I know, there are no Supermen working out at the facility. There may be a spy, or two, but if there are they are really good, ‘cause they’ve got me fooled! So I am not talking about those kinds of movies.
I’m talking about films about every day people overcoming every day, but terrible physical problems. Real heroes overcoming real problems. My problem is a fear of drowning, not water, just drowning.
But here is my message to you – don’t let your health get so bad that someone could turn your life into a heart breaking, disaster film. That’s no way to treat your family.

I don’t have any major physical problems. I am fairly fit for a man my age. And I plan to stay that way. That’s why I came to Paradise in the first place.
I wasn’t exactly ready for the Senior Olympics, mind you. I had my aches and pains. And things that were so simple when I was young, and/or younger, had become challenges. Things like climbing stairs two at a time or squatting down to pick up a quarter off the floor. Before I started coming to Paradise, I was starting to wonder when Washington was going to abolish stairs in favor of escalators!

Now? I don’t mind taking the stairs, and I’m comfortable getting in the water to exercise.

I guess what I’m saying is… wake up, people! We’re all getting older, and there is no Fountain of Youth. Actually, there is. It’s here at Paradise.

Taking an hour long pool exercise class three times a week is not going to make you look like Johnny Depp or Madonna. But… hey, wait a minute. They’re both pushing sixty, so maybe you can look that good… if you’re 45! For sure, you’ll feel stronger and more energetic.
It’s pretty simple stuff, friends. A healthy life is a better life. No matter what other problems you may have in this strange experience we call life, being healthy makes them easier. Ask anyone here, they’ll tell you so. But you already know this, right? Do you really need to suffer a major health setback to get your act together enough to do what you already know you need to do?

CYNTHIA'S STORY

I’d put some weight on after my first hip replacement surgery. Talk about rubbing salt into a fresh wound, huh?

Hip replacement surgery, while becoming more and more common, is not a little thing. It’s a last resort, when all else has failed to alleviate debilitating pain. I am talking about excruciating pain from walking. Just from walking. Not from running a marathon, or climbing a mountain. Just from walking.

Walking is a simple pleasure. I took it for granted, until I could barely do it anymore. So, I was looking forward to walking again, after my surgery. Then I put on weight while recovering, which made it hard to walk. Clearly, I needed a Plan B. “Come with me to paradise,” a friend said. That became Plan B. It should have been Plan A.

My friend had been taking water cardio classes at Paradise three times a week, when she urged me to join her. She’d lost weight. I’ve always loved being around water, so I was not hesitant to join her when she pointed out the obvious to me. You are buoyant in the water, so exercising is not tantamount to taking a literal physical pounding. In fact, exercising in water is so easy on your joints that it doesn’t hurt. You hardly know you are working out, until the results become obvious. I had just never thought of exercising in water until she brought it up.
I lost 20 pounds pretty quickly. All the weight I’d put on after surgery melted off in the Paradise pool. I wonder how much body fat has melted off in that pool? A lot!

Did I mention that working out at Paradise is actually fun? It is! So much fun that it’s addictive. It’s a good thing that it’s addictive, because I had to have a second hip replacement surgery.
Shotgun, both barrels. Bang, Bang! But I’m not dead! “Missed me, missed me, Mr. Reaper, you ain’t gonna kiss me!”
Recovering from the second surgery was much easier than the first, and I credit Starr and the rest of the Paradise staff for that. If not for them, I’d have been in poor physical condition going into the operating room.
But three-a-week sessions following my first hip replacement made it possible for me to skip a lot of pain and suffering after my second. And for that, I am eternally grateful, to Starr and the Paradise people, and my friend who introduced me to Paradise.

I’ve been going to Paradise for a year and a half. The term ROI springs to mind when I think about Paradise. ROI stands for Return On Investment.
I’m no Warren Buffet. I don’t have much money invest. But I have time to invest. Time to invest in myself. And after my first hip replacement, I realized it was time to invest in myself. In my health.
What have I gotten in return for my investment? Better health, obviously. Physical and mental. Just ask my husband.
Three times a week. Are you seriously going to tell me you can’t afford that? Are you going to tell me that your time is so precious that you can’t afford to invest some of it in your health? Seriously?

SUE'S STORY

I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease two years ago. In reality, Parkinson’s had started creeping in at least three years before that. As a violin teacher, I’d noticed that my bow handling was getting more and more robotic, but I ignored it.

Do not ignore the little signs. Talk to your doctor about even the smallest things if they are persistent.

When my massage therapist noticed that my arms didn’t swing when I walked, I had to stop living in denial and face reality. Unfortunately, my current reality is that I am stiff as a board, and my body shakes when I try to do anything. Unless I am submerged in water, that is.

Gravity is a damnable thing to Parkinson’s victims. Being in water is close to Nirvana for us. Paradise, Nirvana, same thing, right?

I wish my house was underwater. I wish I was a mermaid. I wish I didn’t have Parkinson’s Disease. None of those wishes are going t come true anytime soon, if ever, so I am grateful to Starr and her team at Paradise for making life more bearable.

If you don’t know anything about Parkinson’s Disease let me tell you this. It’s caused by the gradual loss of dopamine producing cells in the brain. Dopamine? It regulates movement. And emotion.
So, as your brain stops making dopamine, you get stiffer. And you get tremors. You can become depressed and anxious. The side effects of the drugs they prescribed
were awful. I had no desire to live in a haze, so I went to Paradise.

If you want to understand how absurdly difficult life can be for someone afflicted with Parkinson’s Disease, consider this: I feel stiffness and tightnessunder my hair. It’s like wearing a hat that is two sizes too small. Crazy, huh?

But that all changes when I jump in the pool at Paradise. As soon as I hit the water I go from feeling like the Tin Man after the monsoon season, to feeling like Jane Freaking Fonda, some sort of ninja ballerina.

I can move to the music in my head when I go through my routine that Starr designed for me personally. There is NO WAY I could go through one of Starr’s workout sessions out of the pool. I would look and feel like a zombie trying to do yoga.

I feel so good after my sessions in the Paradise pool. My muscles are softer, my range of motion is better. Any pain I wake up with disappears. Even when I have my bad days I really want to come to Paradise.

Riding a bike is when I feel most “normal”. Biking in the water is an awesome experience. It’s fun, and if it’s fun you will do it! Even life on land is better on the days I can’t make it to Paradise.

Next I’m going to try the infrared sauna. I am told that infrared heat helps PD symptoms go away.

Short of a cure for Parkinson’s, Paradise is the best thing I can wish for, and I don’t need a genie to grant that wish.

LORAINE'S STORY

There is an enduring debate over whether or not you should trust your mechanic. The basic argument, of course, is that while your mechanic may be competent enough to fix your car, he may also be unscrupulous enough to make sure you have to keep coming back, by fixing one thing, but breaking another.

I was plagued by a not dissimilar problem a couple years ago, but it was not about something as trifling as my car, it was about my spine.

I’d had a spinal fusion in 2011. When I started to get pains again, I went to a physiotherapist, who asked about my exercise habits. I told her I was working out at the public pool. Wrong, she said, go to Paradise and see Starr.

Now, I don’t want you to get the idea that the staff at the public pool were trying to harm me, in order to keep me coming back and refilling their coffers. Perish the thought. Fine people, all of them.

No, mine is not a story about unscrupulous individuals. It is, rather, a story about some purported professionals being less competent than others. The nice folk at the public pool simply lack the expertise of Starr and her staff at Paraidise. My physiotherapist understood this, and so did I just a few weeks after taking out a membership.

It was the difference between night and day. The staff at the public pool were well intentioned, but what do they say the road to Hell is paved with? Hell is the opposite of Paradise, right?

Spinal fusion surgery is a last resort for those of us who suffer debilitating back pain. If you have never experienced painful problems with your back, thank your lucky stars, because it is a truly horrendous plight to have to suffer through.
As I say, the surgery is the last resort. So, if you are starting to experience back pain, if you are not yet enduring protracted and substantial discomfort, you should start taking counter measures pronto.

By all means, consult your doctor, but I am confident he or she will tell you to start a regimen of physiotherapy that includes water based exercise.

If you want to save a couple bucks by trying the public pool, go right ahead. But remember, you get what you pay for.

At Paradise, what you’re paying for is relief from pain. What you’re paying for is better health. What you’re paying for is expert care and maintenance.

Starr knows what works for whatever problems you are having. And she knows what doesn’t work for those problems, too. I have been working out in the pool, thinking I was doing something right, only to have Starr come over and say, “Do this Loraine.”

If I miss a few consecutive sessions at Paradise, I can feel it. And every time I start to feel it, I know that my options are clear – get back in the pool, or go back to the operating room. It’s a simple decision to make, and I advise you to think about what your next move is.

BOB'S STORY

I’m a woodworker. A cabinet maker. Have been for a long time. It’s grueling work. Physically demanding.

After long years of hard labor, I was promoted to management. I don’t have to do as much punishing work as I used to, and it’s a good thing, because all that backbreaking work was literally backbreaking.

Wait. I never literally broke my back, but I sure did do some damage, and I really felt it when I was required to move heavy stuff around, which I still am, from time to time.
When I was out of the office, pitching a potential customer, I noticed Paradise. I walked, across the street, and through the doors. B I N G O!
One look around, and I knew Paradise is what my aching back needed.

I wasn’t going to be a fulltime desk-jockey. To keep my job, I was going to have to be fit enough to step away from the desk, and get physical, and there’s no such thing as, “Fake it ‘til you make it,” when you have to push and shove.

The aquacise class I was taking at Paradise was great for relieving the pain in my back. But when I met Starr, and she showed me some stretches, and exercises, specifically for my back, everything changed. My back not only stopped hurting, it felt strong again.

The stretches released the strain in my muscles from my hips to my ribs. Then Starr hooked me up to the Aqualogix drag equipment, which increased resistance. That’s how you strengthen your back. And that’s how you keep your job.

I no longer fear that my back problems, now minor, will result in me losing my job. I have to be careful, but I can still bull around heavy stuff with the kids, thanks to Paradise.

My job demands a lot of my time, so I don’t always get to spend as much time at Paradise as I’d like. Mostly, I like going in on Saturdays, when it’s not so busy. I workout on my own, but I still take the occasional class to learn new things I can do to improve on what I’ve already achieved.

And the far infrared sauna is a perfect compliment for my exercise regimen. An hour in the pool, followed by a half hour, sometimes more, in the sauna, and I feel like a million bucks.

Sometimes, after a good workout, I just float around on a noodle, weightless and care free. And pain free!

On a lazy Saturday afternoon, Paradise is a much better place than the couch.

Some of the kids at the shop are intrigued by my comeback. I suppose they thought it was over for me, the poor old-timer. But I showed ‘em! And they now know that I’ll be around until I take my retirement.

Those kids think they’re indestructible. Well, so did I. But they will learn, probably the hard way, that a lifetime of physical toil comes at a price. I tell them they should get ahead of the game, by coming to Paradise, but they don’t listen. Something tells me that I’ll see them at Paradise, sooner or later.

WHY PERMANENT MAKEUP IS FOR YOU

Permanent Makeup, also known as Micro-pigmentation, has a softer, more natural look than you might think!  Eliminate the hassle of applying your eyeliner or drawing  your eyebrows on everyday.   Never worry again about smeared makeup if you've had to rub your eyes or scratch an eyebrow.  You can enjoy eating and drinking without having to reapply lipstick to your lips!

You will find Permanent Makeup is great if you suffer from  allergies and frequently smear makeup due to itchy or watery eyes. It's also a great alternative if you have allergies or sensitivities to cosmetics. If you are older and have poor vision or an unsteady hand which makes makeup application difficult, Permanent Makeup is right for you!

My name is Heidi Miller, I am a licensed Cosmetologist, and certified in Micro-pigmentation from The Nevada Academy of Micro-pigmentation in 2007.  I use the Softap system, which is done by hand rather than a machine. I believe it is the most effective, comfortable technique, while also being kinder to the skin.

Permanent Eyeliner can be applied to upper or lower lash-lines or both. I like to create a natural looking enhancement for you.  It can also be just a "lash enhancement" where the eyes are defined with a natural look rather than a distinct line.  During the consultation, we will determine which of these, as well as choice of color, best suits your style!

Permanently tattooed eyebrows are done to create the look of a fuller brow. A great choice for anyone with sparse eyebrows or even if you have total hair loss due to age or medical conditions.

Permanent micro-pigmentation on your lips can enhance  your natural color or can be fun and vibrant with your favorite lip color! Your shape can be defined and perfected, creating a fuller look. Your lips can be outlined or completely filled in with color.  As we age, our natural pigment fades and recedes;  Permanent Makeup can restore the youthful color and fullness!

I use a topical anesthetic, which makes it relatively painless! Sometimes slight bleeding will occur during the procedure, swelling will last for about a day, but is relieved with short applications of ice. I will give you exact instructions on how to care for your new permanent makeup, an ointment to apply continually for 10 days, as well as what to expect from day to day of the healing process. I will set up a time for your follow up after 6 weeks, I like to do this to fill in any "holidays" where the pigment may have escaped and make sure you are satisfied with the results. This appointment is included in the price.  Our first session usually takes between 90 minutes to 2 1/2 hours, depending on consultation time, the procedure, your level of comfort,  and the skin's response. The 2nd application usually takes about an hour.

If you live in Carson City, Reno, Gardnerville, Minden, Lake Tahoe or the surrounding areas schedule an appointment for a complimentary consultation with me,  you will be in great hands!

DISCOVERING THE RIGHT MAKEUP COVERAGE FOR YOU

So today I’m going to talk about makeup coverage, and the ability to control it. What I intend to teach you is some of the basics of understanding how coverage affects makeup looks and the different makeup products you can use to achieve a look. Once you learn how to manipulate coverage through proper product selection, you can achieve and create any desired makeup look.

To start you'll need a basic understanding of translucency. Translucency is the ability for light to pass through the makeup and see an amount of skin beneath it. Something that is transparent does not have the ability to block visually and has nothing at all covering the skin. This means there is no coverage. An example of this would be moisturizer. Something that is completely opaque blocks anything from showing through. This means there is full coverage and you can’t see any of the skin. An example of this would be liquid black eyeliner. Translucency, or opacity, is anything between transparent and opaque. This is where the majority of makeup fits in. It ranges anywhere from a low coverage tinted moisturizer to a high coverage concealer.

All makeup is a medium with pigment in it. The solution of the makeup, without the pigment, is how the makeup applies, feels on the skin, and its staying power. The amount of pigment in the solution is how much coverage the product has. The formulation of makeup should have the right amount of pigment ratio to product solution to have the right amount of coverage you need. Kryolan’s philosophy is the right amount of coverage in one thin layer of makeup. You should never build coverage. Layering and layering is never the way to go. You don’t want your makeup to ever feel heavy or thick. If you are ever feeling like you need to put more makeup on, then you don’t have the right coverage of makeup and need a different product. It is important to choose the right coverage for the look you are trying to accomplish, when you don’t pick the right amount of coverage you can never achieve the same look.

Let’s start with the coverage of foundation, and say you are trying to copy a photo you have. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what kind of foundation coverage someone is wearing. Something like a tinted moisturizer has a low pigment concentration and shows a lot of skin. You can sometimes tell if someone is wearing a low coverage foundation when you see the person’s freckles or natural skin through the makeup. But some people just don’t have many skin imperfections or freckles; therefore only need a low coverage foundation to achieve a super flawless look. This is where you assess your own skin. If you want your skin to look completely flawless and you have freckles, discolorations, or blemishes; then you will need something with enough coverage to cover the darkest imperfections on your face in one thin layer of makeup. If you don't mind your freckles or anything showing, then a lower coverage foundation is all you need. If you are mixing your foundation with moisturizer to dilute it down to feel less heavy and look like less makeup on the skin, you have too high of a coverage and you should probably switch to a tinted moisturizer. Although that trick can be handy if you are only doing that on an occasion you don’t feel like being as made up as usual.

You don’t normally think of eye shadows, blushes, or lipsticks when you think of coverage, but it is absolutely just as important with these products as well. You don’t want to keep layering your eye shadow to get a higher opacity or blend it out forever to make it more translucent. Choose an eye shadow that goes on with the amount coverage you need in one brush stroke. The higher the pigment concentration the more vibrant and true-to-color it is. If you are blending out the color because it is too dark, then you need to buy a new shade of eye shadow. Same goes if you are layering because the color itself is too light.

The same exact concept applies to blush. You don’t want to buy a blush that you are having to apply a couple of times to be enough, or to spend forever blending it out because it goes on too heavily. Although cream blush has a much higher pigment load, it can have the same amount of translucency as the powder blush. This is because you use so much less of the product to achieve the same look.

As far as lip colors, figure out how much coverage you want on your lips. If a tinted chap-stick is enough for you, don’t buy something as bold and opaque as a lipstick. If you want something between the two there are lip stains and lip glosses. Now most lipsticks are pretty high in opacity but do vary a bit in the higher ranges of pigment. Since all these things have different qualities, sometimes you have to combine a couple of different lip products. An example would be, you want the full coverage of a lipstick and the shiny effect of a lip gloss. If you are only patting on some lipstick and then spreading it across your lips to make it less opaque, the pigment load is too high. If you are spreading it out because the color is too dark of a shade and you would actually like it more opaque, then you just need to buy a different color of lipstick. Same goes putting on a lipstick or gloss and you feel it isn’t covering enough, then you need to buy something with a higher coverage.

Playing with enough products, while paying attention to the coverage rather than the other qualities of the makeup, will help you hone this skill. Once you have this down, you will never waist money on products that aren’t right for you again. Remember that you want the right amount of coverage in one thin layer of makeup. You will then have the ability to accurately create any desired look you are trying to accomplish and will have the power to manipulate coverage.

EYEBROW MICROBLADING

Whether they’re feathered, arched, or bold and bushy, eyebrows are possibly the most important feature on your face. Because they provide so many of the visual cues we need to read expressions, eyebrows also communicate a lot of important information. In fact, your eyebrows can either work as a help or a hindrance when you’re trying to make a solid first impression.

If your eyebrows are looking a little lackluster, there are some things you can do to perk them up – penciling them in a little darker, using brow gel to define them better, or even having eyebrows tattooed onto your face. However, there’s a more natural option that provide semi-permanent brows that don’t look like someone drew them on.

The technique involves using a special pen to draw on individual strokes one at a time – a very painstaking process that can take up to two hours. But this procedure can provide a ton of benefits to almost everyone.

SHORTENS YOUR MORNING ROUTINE

When you roll out of bed already knowing that your eyebrows look great, you don’t have to put in quite as much effort to put on your face and get yourself ready to face the world. Microblading can last for up to three years before it starts to fade, meaning you’ve got three years of stress-free mornings where you don’t need to worry about plucking, tweezing, or filling in sparse brows with a pencil.

DOESN’T SMUDGE OR SMEAR

Even when you’re sweating on a treadmill, in the sun, or at the spa, you don’t have to worry about your eyebrows smearing or looking strange. Pigment is implanted into the top three layers of skin, so it doesn’t matter how active your lifestyle is – microbladed brows can handle anything you throw at them.

ALMOST PAINLESS

If you’re the kind of person who panics at the sight of a needle, there’s no need to worry. One of the first things a microblading professional will do is apply a strong numbing cream to the eyebrow area before they even begin working. This makes the entire process almost completely painless, but you may still feel the pigment being pushed into your skin. It’s not painful, just a bit of a different kind of sensation.

STAY ON TREND

Since microblading isn’t a permanent eyebrow application, you’ll be able to keep up with new eyebrow styles as they change. You can reshape your brows to accommodate trends and always feel confident that your eyebrows are on point and looking sharp. However, this semi-permanent result does also mean you’ll need to visit the salon in one to three years’ time for a touch-up, even if you plan to keep the same style.

COLOR STAYS CONSISTENT

Unlike with tattoos, where colors can somehow shift from black to hues of bluish-green, microblading uses all organic pigments – specifically made so that they never change color. Instead, these pigments will slowly fade over time, while maintaining their original color. You’ll know when it’s time for a touch up, but your brows will never look strange.

RESTORES CONFIDENCE

Anyone who experiences hair loss or a lack of hair growth can end up with sparse, weak-looking brows. Cancer patients, or people who suffer from skin diseases like alopecia, won’t have to worry about looking out of place with their lack of brows. In fact, microblading was originally founded in Asia as a way to help people who had undergone chemotherapy treatments and lost significant amounts of hair.

It’s not only helpful for people suffering from skin or hair conditions, though – microblading can give anyone a boost of confidence by helping your face make the right statement. It’s much easier to feel good about yourself when you know you’re looking your best, and healthy, beautiful, natural-looking eyebrows are a strong step in that direction.

If you’ve never considered any kind of cosmetic enhancement before, microblading is a great place to start. It’s minimally invasive, very safe, and virtually painless. This hot new trend is becoming one of the best ways to get the look of fuller brows without having to put on makeup every morning. If you’re sick of your sparse brows, see what microblading can do for you.

SAUNA USE LEADS TO A HEALTHIER BRAIN AND MORE

Listening to a pod cast about how to improve muscle growth, endurance and generate better brain function has me really excited today.  To sum up what Dr. Rhonda Patrick presented:  If you use the sauna for "Hyperthermic Conditioning" you can increase your body's production of Growth Hormone.  Science has proven that Growth Hormone (IGF-1) increases muscle while reducing fat, helps repair lean muscle, increases the growth of new brain cells, AND it prevents your brain cells from dying.  You can also increase your body's production of Growth Hormone with strenuous exercise but your body will become acclimated to strenuous exercise over time and it will be less effective.  BUT  you can use the sauna for 30 minutes a day and enhance your body's performance.  This is less stressful on the body and just as effective!   But don't stop exercising all together, you just add the sauna on those days when you need a rest from pounding the pavement or slamming the weights.  Super simple, super effective, sit in the sauna for 30 minutes.

Who should not use a sauna is answered in this article from the American Journal of Medicine: http://www.amjmed.com/article/S0002-9343(00)00671-9/abstract

Sauna use leads to a healthier brain, enhances endurance, and increases muscle while reducing fat!

REDUCE STRESS WITH A MASSAGE IN CARSON CITY

Everyone seem to be interested in ways in which we can control our stress. Stress is defined as any psychological or physical situation or condition that causes tension or strain. In the definition we have two components; physical and psychological, they tend to manifest as one thing. If we want relief from stress,we need to take an active roll for our own state of health.

Wellness is a concept in which people take personal responsibility. An active roll you can do easily is to get a massage.

Massage is defined as systematic manual or mechanical manipulations of the soft tissues of the body for therapeutic purposes, including stress reduction. Some of the physiological benefits are improved muscle tone, circulation, and glandular activities. It promotes health and wellness while reducing stress. Soreness and stiffness of muscles will also get relief.

A professional massage also benefits all the other systems of the body. For example; a massage therapist can use cross-fiber friction and compression movements to help prevent the formation of adhesions and fibrosis in muscles. A therapist may also use friction, vibration and percussion movements to produce a stimulation effect on the nervous system, while gentler strokes such as petrissage produce a sedative effect for the relief of tension. Massage movements that are directed toward the heart will facilitate the flow of blood and lymph back toward the heart. All these movements improve the circulation of blood, which in turn supplies beneficial nutrients to the skin.

Because mind, body and spirit are one, massage is a good start in the pursuit of your personal practice and process for stress reduction.

Massage should be avoided if you have a condition that appears to be a contraindication (medically inadvisable) to massage. Similarly, if you have a medical or mental condition that needs medical attention such as pain, redness, swelling or high temperature, massage should be avoided.

In a future musing, I hope to discuss simple roles we can take on for our own state of health and wellness. These include meditation, exercise, low-fat/high fiber diet, the balance between work and play, keeping a positive mental and spiritual attitude, healthy aging and stress resistance, the benefits of epsom salt baths and essential oils, self-acupressure for common ailments and more on massage. My source for much of this information came from; Theory and Practice of Therapeutic Massage by Mark F. Beck

ARTHRITIS PAIN RELIEF TIPS AND TRICKS

First, what is arthritis?  (Source: Arthritis Foundation)

Simply put it is painful inflammation of the joints.  There are over 100 different types of arthritis...  Symptoms are joint pain, swelling, stiffness, a loss of range of motion, plus pain can be moderate to severe, coming and going, etc.  Diagnosing arthritis is complex, but we are not focusing on diagnosis.  That is for you and your doctor to do together.

What can you do about arthritis pain?

Here are a few GENERAL actions you can take to relieve the pain of arthritis.

Regular non-impact physical activity (water exercise is excellent)

Maintaining a healthy weight (diet is #1, eating fresh healthy food)

Strengthening the muscles around the joint for added support

Balancing activity with rest (a good night’s sleep is priceless)

Using hot and cold therapies (ice packs, warm water soaks, sauna)

Qigong can be used for relief from arthritic discomfort as well

What is Qigong?

Life is energy.  Qi (pronounced “chee”) is the word for that life-force energy. Qi is everywhere, it’s in the earth, the galaxy, and your body.  Qigong is meditation with movement; a conscious form of very gentle exercise. Qigong enhances the body’s natural healing abilities, it helps you to cultivate Qi through slow movements, smooth breathing, and focused thoughts.

The Chinese physician believes Qi imbalance is the cause of many illnesses.  An emphasis is put on rebuilding the overall health and strength of spirit of the person, restoring a proper supply of Qi and blood to the body’s cells.

Aquatic Qigong called Ai Chi is taught in the warm saltwater pool at Paradise.

Theory:  There are 3 levels of relaxation.  The first level is postural relaxation.  The second is relaxation of the muscles & tendons.  The third is deep relaxation reaching into the internal organs, allowing you to sense their state.   In the case of Qigong treatment for arthritis, when you have reached the third level of relaxation you can lead the qi deeply into the joint where it will repair the damage.  And so the Qigong treatment must begin with relaxed and gentle movements to smoothly increase Qi circulation.  The first stage of treatment is to learn how to relax and avoid muscle/tendon tension and stress, which can increase pressure on the joint and continue to damage it. (This is why water is wonderful, the buoyancy takes all the stress off the joints.) You must also place your mind on the tender joints.  The more you bring your mind deeply into the joint and relax it, the more Qi will circulate smoothly and freely to repair the damage.  The best time to practice Qigong is in the morning, it gets your energy flowing after being still all night.

Practical: XU HONGTAO MEDICAL QIGONG SELF MASSAGE
Sitting comfortably with relaxed muscles, take 9 slow deep breaths, women L (left) hand over R(right), Men R hand over L, placed on the low belly. Your mind is calm focusing on what is going on inside your body. Visualize energy in your body moving, taking away stagnant or stale Qi.

  1. Warm your hands by rubbing them together 9 or 18 times
  2. Make 3 slow circles around your eyes, feel the warmth from your hands
  3. Brush your hands over & around your ears 3 times, combing your hair back
  4. Make 3 sweeping strokes down the back of your neck and shoulders
  5. Make 3 sweeping strokes downward on the chest
  6. Make 3 sweeping strokes downward on the front of your hips
  7. Make 3 strokes down reaching as high as you can on the kidney region (low back)
  8. Make 3 inward circles around kneecaps, 3 outward circles around kneecaps
  9. Make 3 long sweeping strokes down the outside of the legs
  10. Make 3 long sweeping strokes UP the inside of the legs
  11. Make 3 circle strokes around the elbow joint, women L then R, men R then L
  12. Make 3 long strokes down each arm, women L then R, men R then L

REPEAT 3, 6 or 9 times, ending as you started, sitting comfortably… etc.

Some more tips for success:

  • Do not do heavy exercises when inflamed, gently massage the joint & do light Qigong.
  • When you have less pain & stiffness, take advantage & practice a little more.
  • Don’t overdo it.  If you have significant pain 2 hours after, you overdid it.
  • Practice a comfortable length of time and gradually increase the repetitions.
  • Focus your mind on the body part, imagine breathing in and out of the joint.
  • Practice in nature for maximum benefits.
  • Bundle up if cold increases your arthritis pain.
  • As always, your doctor is the one to talk to before beginning a new exercise routine.
  • This Qigong self massage is a tiny sampling of the EXPANSIVE knowledge in traditional Chinese Medicine.
  • Use anti-oxidants to help reduce inflammation. We personally recommend SOD, CoQ10, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Turmeric Curcumin, Hawaiian Astaxanthin, or Vitamin C, along with a diet rich in dark colored fruits and vegetables.

I hope this helps you get relief.

There is no disrobing required to receive Reiki. It goes through clothing, blankets, and even casts. It is always safe, and there are no side effects. Reiki promotes relaxation, decreases stress, and may lead to deeper levels of healing. It is primarily concerned with health, not dis-ease. Reiki works on healing the body, mind, and spirit.
